Samuel P.N. Cook.

He wrote strategy under fire — literally — then spent a decade proving the same craft sells ideas in peacetime.

§01In Brief

The Short Version

From West Point to a funnel in Kyiv.

Samuel P.N. Cook graduated West Point in 2000, served as a U.S. Cavalry officer, and was responsible for the messaging and written history of a regiment in the Battle of Tal Afar — a fight President Bush would later call a turning point in the Iraq War. He came home, taught history at West Point, and then asked a simple question: if a well-told story can change the course of a campaign, what could it do for an expert with something real to sell? In 2013 he founded James Cook Media to find out. More than $10M in client revenue later — and now based in Kyiv, Ukraine — the answer is settled.

§03The Long Version

The Longer Story

Five chapters, one through-line.

01

The Academy

West Point teaches you that words under pressure are not decoration — they are command. Samuel graduated in 2000 having learned to write where every sentence is read by someone whose decisions depend on it. It was the first place he understood that clarity is a kind of leadership.

02

The War

As Regimental Adjutant of the 3d Armored Cavalry under H.R. McMaster, Samuel was responsible for the messaging and the written history of his unit at the Battle of Tal Afar — later cited as a turning point in the war. Commanding Crazyhorse Troop, his counterinsurgency strategy of tribal negotiation produced a mass surrender, and a story the Washington Post and Tom Ricks chose to tell.

03

The Return

Home from Iraq, Samuel returned to West Point to teach history — and to study, formally, how narrative shapes the way people remember and decide. A master's in Russian and Ukrainian history followed. He was, by now, fluent in the one thing most marketers never learn: how stories actually move human beings.

04

The Business

In 2013 he founded James Cook Media on a single bet: that the craft which mattered in a war room would matter even more in a marketplace. The first client was Bobby McGee, a six-time Olympic running coach who hated self-promotion — the kind of expert who'd rather not sell at all than "prostitute himself" to do it. Samuel didn't turn him into a marketer. He built the campaign around Bobby's story, and it returned $250K in six months. Then Peter Sage — $200K a year to $1.8M in ten months. The pattern held because it always started with the story, never the selling.

05

Today

Samuel lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine. He teaches the StoryMatters method to thousands through the live MasterClass — now co-led with Ievgen Krasovytskyi — and builds the Podcast Studio that puts each expert's voice in front of their audience weekly. In an age when AI can write anything, he has spent his whole life proving the one thing it can't write is yours.

§03·5In the Room

Not a Theory — a Practice

Still in the room, every week.

Samuel doesn't teach from a distance. On stage, at the whiteboard, one-to-one with an expert who's brilliant and just needs to be found — this is the actual work, in real rooms with real people.

§04His Voice

In His Own Words

What he believes, in his own voice.

"Strategy without story is just a spreadsheet nobody believes in."

On Marketing

"If your message can change lives, you have an obligation to tell it well."

On Craft

"A machine can copy your words. It can never copy where you've been."
